Like most traditional medical systems, moxibustion boasts a remarkably long history that can be traced back to the dawn of civilization. The classic Chinese medical text, the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, already contains records of moxibustion. As a systematic and globally influential medical reference work, it even discusses the origins of moxibustion.

The classic Chinese medical text, the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, already contains records of moxibustion. As a systematic and globally influential medical reference work, it even discusses the origins of moxibustion.
The Chinese character for moxibustion, “灸,” is composed of the radicals “long” and “fire,” conveying the idea of burning a fire for a prolonged period. The therapeutic efficacy of moxibustion stems from the production of heterologous proteins during the mild thermal injury: when mugwort is placed directly on the skin and ignited, a slight burn is induced, prompting the body to synthesize these heterologous proteins. These proteins help regulate bodily functions and facilitate recovery from illness.
Heterologous proteins can trigger a variety of allergic reactions—such as sneezing, runny nose, tearing, and acne—depending on the type of protein and the individual’s constitution; in severe cases, they may even cause diarrhea, vomiting, and food poisoning. However, heterologous proteins generated through moxibustion not only have no adverse side effects but also enhance the body’s immune substances and boost overall resistance. Recent research has shown that after moxibustion, cellular movement accelerates, wounds on the skin and mucous membranes heal more easily, and fractured bones recover rapidly. It can also promote
With improved blood circulation, the composition of the blood also changes. The red blood cell count rises, leading to increased oxygen levels in the body. At the same time, the white blood cell count increases as well; healthy white blood cells enhance the immune function of the blood. Moreover, moxibustion helps stabilize hormones and the nervous system, restoring normal function to the internal organs. Remarkably, moxibustion has a powerful analgesic effect: pain that cannot be relieved by medication often disappears after treatment.
